
The new EU Regulation No. 2023/1542 of 12 July 2023 on all batteries and waste from batteries was published in the French Official Bulletin L 191 of 28 July 2023. ecosystem offers you a clear and readable summary of the 83 pages of the regulation, including the dates and conditions of entry into force of the various obligations for Battery Producers and other economic actors.
The EU Regulation No. 2023/1542 of 12 July 2023 now defines 5 categories of batteries (compared with 3 previously):
- Portable batteries
- Light means of transport (LMT) batteries
- Industrial batteries
- Electric and Hybrid Vehicle (EHV) batteries
- Starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) batteries
It defines a comprehensive legal framework covering the entire lifecycle of batteries, from the manufacturing through to the management of the resulting waste, including their possible second life. It sets out minimum requirements for Extended Producer Responsibility, the collection and treatment of battery waste as well as the provision of information. It also imposes requirements in terms of durability, safety, labelling, marking and information to authorise the placing on the market or putting into service of batteries within the EU.
This new framework is being implemented gradually from the date of its entry into force on 18/08/2023.
