New: accreditation for battery recycling

Since June 2024, thanks to the merger with Corepile, ecosystem has been offering end-of-life management for batteries. An obvious and beneficial synergy for Producers, since 60% of “Batteries” marketers are also involved in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) sector, and ¼ of EEE placed on the market contains batteries.
The battery industry has evolved since its creation in 1999. In view of the strategic importance of batteries (scarcity of resources, nomadic lifestyles, the global strategic choice to electrify modes of transport, etc.), the old European directive dating from 2006 has undergone recent changes to better meet the challenges facing this sector.
European regulation 2023/1542, published on July 12, 2023, now defines 5 battery categories, compared with 3 previously:
The regulation lays down minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility, new collection and treatment targets for waste batteries, as well as information and reporting requirements. It also imposes requirements for batteries in terms of sustainability, safety, labelling and information, to authorize their placement on the market or use of these batteries within the European Union.
This includes an obligation to disclose and indicate the carbon footprint of the battery, as well as a digital passport. Furthermore, the replacement of portable batteries by consumers should be facilitated by making batteries accessible.

This new European regulatory framework is being implemented progressively, from its entry into force in August 2023.
In France, the specifications enabling applicant eco-organizations to apply for approval to manage end-of-life batteries (waste collection and treatment) are due to be published in the first half of 2025. ecosystem is applying for approval for all 5 battery categories, which will be issued by the public authorities on August 18, 2025.
We've already been operating in 2 of these categories for many years through our subsidiary Corepile, which will become a fully integrated ecosystem business from July 1, 2025, when the merger between the two companies is finalized.
The 5 battery categories from August 18, 2025
The 2 categories in which we have already been operating for many years through our subsidiary Corepile:
Producers of portable batteries: obligations and solutions
Although this category is not subject to approval, since 2018 Corepile has been voluntarily offering a solution for taking charge of batteries from bicycles, scooters and other light means of transport. This involves a battery that is sealed, weighs 25kg or less and is specifically designed to provide the electrical energy needed to power wheeled vehicles, and is not an electric vehicle battery.
